Texas Holdem Tip #12 - Play Premium Hands.

Today’s Texas Holdem Tip comes courtesy of a little research by pokerroom.com. They analyzed millions of real money hands and calculated the expected value (EV) of each of the 169 possible starting hands. The following hands are the only ones with a positive expected value.

Pairs - AA through 66

Suited - AK-A3, KQ-K8, QJ-Q9, JT-J9, and T9

Unsuited - AK-AT, KQ-KT, QJ

This is only 39 of 169 possible starting hands (23% of the total). All other hands lost money! Looking a little deeper, only 17 hands (about 10%) returned 20 cents for each dollar bet.

Translation: if you are betting on more than one out of every four texas holdem hands dealt, you will lose money over the long run. We have talked about poker as a game of patience, and this data certainly clarifies that. Part of every great poker system is the knowledge of which hands to play and how to play them. Use this holdem tip to your advantage - only play premium hands.

See you at the tables …
